New orchestral work: Slinkies, blocks and train sets

Before composing this piece, I admit that the wind band was an unfamiliar area of ensemble music for me - with my only association being through its traditional role in a military context. However, this unfamiliarity sparked a wave a creativity where everything felt new and I was oblivious to any initial technical limitations. It felt like being a kid again at Christmas. Being transported back reminded me how, as children, we experience a magical period of continuous discovery: every new encounter, whether filled with joy or fear, triggers the “oohs” and “aahs” in our brain like watching a firework display which, as adults, we only seem to consistently have when watching an actual firework display.

Slinkies, blocks and train sets seeks to capture this boundless power of a child’s imagination, weaving two vivid scenes of childhood play together through exploratory blocks of musical development. This piece aims to portray how lost we become when we are in our little imaginary worlds and how such enjoyment is inadvertently preparing us for the world.
