For this work, I wanted to completely remove myself from the comfortable approach I had been taking to composition and really challenge myself with tight restrictions. As a result, I fell upon Slonimsky's Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Patterns (a resource popularised by John Adams and John Coltrane). Confined to my own scale degrees, I chose to restrict myself to it entirely for the whole duration of the piece which, given the tempo of the piece, I found immensely difficult to adhere to. But I am glad that I did as it made look at each instrument more intuitively; searching for new timbral colours and combinations.
Memories in Rust and Cobwebs is a chamber piece which encapsulates a scrapyard, the decaying artefacts, and the memories found within them. Workshopped by CHROMA Ensemble, the piece is scored for flute, clarinet, trumpet, violin, viola and cello.
